Celebrating International Women's Day 2016

Hi Everyone!

I just wanted to take some time today to celebrate International Women's Day. I feel so lucky to come into the office everyday and work with the amazing women and men of Lioness who are so passionate about destigmatizing women's sexuality. In light of the wonderful IWD themes this year, #pledgeforparity #planet5050by2030 and #showyourplace, I wanted to share with you a little bit about our small, but strong pride!

What drives you to do Lioness:
Because women deserve to know their bodies, and I'm tired of female sexuality (and sexuality in general) being as stigmatized as it is, even in 2016.

Why is #pledgeforparity important to you?:
Because everyone should have the same access to opportunities and not be limited because of prejudice or stereotypes.

Tell me something most people don’t know about you!:
I'm an award-winning yarn spinner. I created handspun yarn from sheep, alpaca, synthetics, you name it. If it's fiber, I can spin it.

Anything you want to say to young women for IWD?:
This is something I wish I knew when I was younger—if you don't succeed at something the first time, it's perfectly fine. Don't give up just because of that. It doesn't mean that you're incapable at doing something. A lot of great things come from years of passion, hard work, and persistence.

What drives you to do Lioness:
Women's sexual health has been neglected for a long time. It not only affects quality of life, but the taboo around it also distorts how we see and talk about women as a whole. Lioness has a chance of fundamentally changing what we know both scientifically and societally about female sexuality.

Why is #pledgeforparity important to you?:
I've been asked a lot (in vague terms) what boils down to, "why do you care about women's causes as a guy?" The premise is we can't care about what we aren't and "doesn't affect us"—but that's wrong, women's equality affects all of us. Personally, we all have friends/wives/mothers/sisters. Morally, it defines us if we treat an entire half of our population differently by accident of birth. And finally, practically, how much talent are we shutting out by making it harder for women to contribute equally? Our ability to progress will literally be affected by our ability to treat women equally.

Tell me something most people don’t know about you!:
College friends certainly know this, but I wasn't an engineering, computer science, or statistics major in college (as most people now assume). I was a philosophy and econ major who was in a frat and rowed on the crew team. We're all complex people.

Anything you want to say to young women for IWD?:
Reach for the stars and don't limit your dreams.

What drives you to do Lioness:
Being proud of my own sexuality was a painful personal journey, but it makes me a stronger person everyday. I hope that through Lioness, I can share that same strength with other women.

Why is #pledgeforparity important to you?:
A surprising fact I learned when I first joined the vibrator industry is that it is still mostly dominated by male leadership. To me, pledging for parity means calling for gender-balanced leadership!

Tell me something most people don’t know about you!:
A lot of people assume I'm a dainty girly girl, but I grew up trap shooting all my life and I'm pretty damn good.

Anything you want to say to young women for IWD?:
When I first started working, I worried if people would take me seriously as an engineer in dresses vs pants, heels vs tennis shoes, etc. My response now? "I can engineer just as well in my 4 inch heels as in my sneakers." Keep being unstoppable.

What drives you to do Lioness?:
I love working here because I get to work with women one-on-one, listen to their stories, and talk to them about how we can better serve their needs.

Why is #pledgeforparity important to you?
#Pledgeforparity is important for me because women need to be recognized for their accomplishments! There are so many brave, intelligent, and creative women out there who are often overshadowed by their male counterparts.

Tell me something most people don’t know about you!:
I have ice cream sandwiches and beer for dinner more often than I should.

Anything you want to say to young women for IWD?:
Live your truth and be unapologetically yourself! There will always be people who will try to sway you in the opposite direction.

Have a great International Women's Day, everyone. Thanks for reading!
