Find the best butt plug: A practical guide

It's a toy for the butt

What is a butt plug?

You might be here because you’re just starting to look into butt plugs or you’re a veteran butt-connoisseur looking for the next new thing.

We’ve got some how-to basics at the beginning, as well as some great recommendations for a variety of butt plugs to add to your sex toy collection. 👇

Why are butt plugs great?

There are a lot of reasons and ways you can incorporate butt plugs and other anal toys into your sexual routine.

Add new sensation/stimulation to solo or partner play

Put simply, you want to feel good. Anal play of all sorts can open up a whole new world of sexual exploration, and butt plugs can be your ticket to pleasuretown. You might enjoy the plugs by themselves or add other genital stimulation during solo or partner sessions. It’s like adding a new dimension of pleasure to your experience, and who can say no to that?

You can use them during sex

Most sex toys are difficult to use during intercourse. Heck, even many couples toys that are designed to be used during partnered sex sometimes don’t work that well. That’s not as much the case for butt plugs. Depending on what you’re doing, they can be out of the way, giving you some pleasure, while you’re preoccupied with other things.

Practice for anal sex

Using any sex toys can be great practice for sex and exploring your pleasure. Likewise, butt plugs (and their cousin anal beads) can be great ways to practice anal sex. You can get something small and work your way up, take your time, and try them anytime you feel like it.

Secretly happy woman

You can wear them out

If you are into a bit of public play, domination/submission, humiliation, or other kinks, wearing a butt plug is one way to explore those fantasies. To each their own, right? No one needs to know… except your partner, maybe.

It’s not something you can do with most other sex toys—even most vibrators designed to be worn in panties don’t stay in place/stimulate well (and subsequently don’t get stellar reviews). So want to make a grocery store trip more interesting? Wear a butt plug. 😉

Anybody can use them

Everybody has a butt. Anybody can use butt plugs and add them to their sexual repertoire if they so choose.

How to insert a butt plug

If you're new to anal play, start small. If you or a partner have been eyeing that big butt plug in the sex shop, hold on a second. If you’re still relatively new and haven’t done anything in the ballpark of that size, you should start small to see if you even like the sensation and practice before going bigger (if you want to, even). Start out with a lubricated finger or small butt plugs or anal beads, and then work your way up if you want to explore more anal penetration.

Lube is your new best friend.

Lube is key to having a smoother and more enjoyable experience. If you don’t have some already, we’ve put together a guide to some great anal lubricants that you can check out here. Water-based is great with toys, but silicone-based lubricants last longer (but are not compatible with all toys). Unlike a vagina, the anus doesn’t self-lubricate... Heck, even vaginas need lube, too, so your butt especially needs the lubrication.

Use the bathroom

Let’s be real. If you don’t want to have a bit of poop involved in your anal play, you should go to the bathroom and make sure your butt is clean beforehand. If you want to be super clean, get a detachable shower head or a bidet to use beforehand.

Be mindful of your body

For some people, anal play comes naturally. For others, it might take some time to practice and get used to the sensation, if they like it at all. If something feels off or you don’t feel comfortable, you shouldn’t need to push yourself to do something that could potentially hurt you. Likewise, even if you’re really keen on trying something, if your body says no, pause or stop the session.

It’s not a race

Although the end goal of having that sweet new butt plug in you might sound exciting and you want to be there NOW, you do need to get it in there, and hopefully also enjoy the process of sliding it in. Your car doesn’t go from 0-100 on a dime. Likewise, your body doesn’t, either. Take your time to stimulate, lubricate, and rev yourself up to the point that your mind and body are both ready and wanting.

If butt plugs are not your thing, that’s perfectly fine, too!

Some sex acts might sound interesting in theory but feel like a hassle in reality. Or maybe you find that you don’t like it. That’s perfectly fine, too! People don’t have to try every single sexual thing on the checklist.

There’s nothing wrong with you if something “doesn’t work” or doesn’t excite you. You can always check them out again another time. Your body is always changing and we are always having new experiences that change us, so if not now, maybe another time will be better for you to explore and enjoy anal play.

What to look for in an anal plug?

Flared base

First and foremost, it’s extremely important to look for something that has a flared base—basically something that makes it impossible for you to accidentally lose your grip.

Do not use a regular ‘ol dildo/smooth wand or try to get creative or DIY your butt plugs. I repeat, DO NOT. Why? Because you run the risk of getting something stuck in your rectum, which may require a hospital visit to remove. Knowing several doctors and nurses who are family and friends in my life, I’ve heard my share of “things stuck up the butt” stories (that they’re willing to share). It does happen, so be smart about your butt plugs and how you use them.

While smooth dildos/vibrators are a no-go, you can use rabbit vibrators if their external/"clitoral" stimulator is flared enough to act as a base for anal play. We covered the how-tos of how to use rabbit-style vibrators for anal play here using our Lioness Vibrator as an example.

Body safe materials

Like a vagina, your anus is very good at absorbing chemicals and materials that can jump the bloodstream. Remember the news stories about teenagers getting drunk by dunking tampons into vodka? The same sort of thing can happen with the anus.

With that said, there are materials out there that are not absorbent and therefore body-safe. These include silicone, stainless steel, and glass. If you're curious to learn more about that, we go over some of that information here (this guide is more vibrator-centric but a lot of the advice also applies to sex toys in general)

Size

There are many size options of butt plugs, depending on what you’re looking for. As said, if you’re newer to anal play, we recommend starting small. But for the folks who prefer bigger, there are plenty of bigger toys out there to suit your fancy, too!

Weight

Sometimes the weight of the device can provide some added stimulation. Silicone toys tend to be on the lighter side, while stainless steel is heavier (glass falls into the middle of this spectrum). There are also some toys that are deliberately weighted specifically for people who are looking for that kind of stimulation.

Vibration / Remote control / Other Stimulation?

Some butt plugs can also vibrate. Some of these vibrating butt plugs can also be remotely controlled, so you have the option of handing the reins to your partner for another dimension of play.

Colors and cool designs

There are some pretty cool butt plugs out there. If design is your thing and you’re looking for more than a shape that stimulates you, there are butt plugs with Swarovski, tails, and geeky things galore. There are also butt plugs with dazzling colors.
